Altar Servers

Altar Servers(2)This ministry is open to all children of our parish. Grades 4 and higher.

Serving at the altar, Pope Francis told the young people, is a privileged way to draw closer to Jesus, which in turn “enables you to open yourselves to others, to journey together, to set demanding goals and to find the strength to achieve them.”

“The closer you are to the altar,” he told them, “the more you will remember to speak with Jesus in daily prayer; the more you will be nourished by the word and the body of the Lord, the better able you will be to go out to others, bringing them the gift that you have received, giving in turn with enthusiasm the joy you have received.

Just a few notes

Candles: The church is now using wooden processional candles. They are placed in stands at the back of the altar and the altar candles are left as-is during the Mass. If your child hasn’t had the opportunity to use these, please arrive early for your next scheduled assignment to talk with the sacristan. Word on the street is that they are MUCH lighter, so this will be a positive change.

Reverence: We’ve had a few more concerns expressed lately about servers being distracted on the altar. These are kids, and they are all doing their best up there. What parents can do to help is issue a loving reminder before Mass, and then don’t distract them by waving to them or otherwise signaling them during Mass. If parishioners are confronting your children with “tips” or criticism, please gently redirect the conversation and let me know.

Please take a minute to look through and make note of your child’s assigned days and times, because with the increasing number of servers out on vacation over summer we’ve had to really make use of alternate Mass times people said they would be available. For our standard 9:00 servers, this is a short month of only 4 weekends so not everyone made it onto the schedule. To increase your child’s opportunities to serve, please consider adding a back-up time slot at another Mass (other than 7:30 a.m. our greatest need is for the 5:00 p.m. Saturday service). If you have a scheduling conflict, please arrange for a substitute and let me know as soon as possible so that I can update the schedule. An other note…

·         Servers should sign in each time they serve using the following guidelines:

  •  If you’re scheduled, sign in the first column next to your name under “Scheduled Servers.
  • If you have arranged to substitute for a scheduled server, go to the name of the person you’re subbing for and sign in on that row in the column titled “Substitute Servers.”
  •  If you just show up and they need people on the altar, sign in under the column heading “Volunteer Servers.”

As a reminder, you are responsible for finding a sub if you cannot attend a scheduled Mass. If it’s last minute (i.e. your child wakes up sick) please let me know so that I can try to get someone there.
